Pugs increase in popularity

pugs popularityFor the first time ever, the Pug has entered the UK Top 20. Yes, you read correctly. Pugs are in the Top 20. Who’d have thought it!
Of course this has nothing to do with music charts or book sales. You’d probably have guessed that already. But it does have rather a lot to do with the fact that the benefits of Pug ownership are on the increase. It may have taken a long time – about 2,500 years in fact – but people have finally come to realise what a fabulous pet dog the Pug makes.
Originally the Pug found favour with Chinese emperors back in its native homeland. Then it was the House of Orange in 16th century Holland. In 18th century France Marie Antoinette had one, as did Napoleon Bonaparte’s legendary Josephine. Later, it was Queen Victoria in 19th century England who loved Pugs so much she took to breeding them. Now apparently, early in the 21st century, it’s the likes of fashion designer Valentino who loves them so much he has no less than six!
What have all the above in common? Apart that is from having more money than you and we are ever likely to have; especially now the world we knew and loved seems to have changed forever. An appreciation that the Pug makes just about the most perfect companion dog. Oh, they make excellent family pets as well of course with their massively appealing little flat faces and their big round dark eyes. Who wouldn’t love them to bits?
But most of all it’s because Pug’s are so accommodating. They’re so flexible. So willing to adapt to family life with children or to the more solitary life with a single person owner. They’re sociable, intelligent, friendly, bursting with personality, have a keen sense of humour and they’re robust all at the same time.
With all those things going for it, is it any wonder that the Pug has finally been recognised as one of the UK’s most popular dogs!
